President’s Message

A warm welcome to all!

The MPA committee has begun its work on the 23rd MCPM. The conference will continue its tradition of displaying various yet vital issues in mental health. As in previous years, the committee will invite experts to speak on the numerous areas and vital matters relevant to mental health and its growth.

This year the Malaysian Psychiatry Association committee is excited to work together with the esteemed members of the The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Psychotherapy Section. There was no hesitation from the committee when Prof César Alfonso offered to hold the conference in Malaysia. Likewise, psychotherapies including psychodynamic psychotherapy have steadily gained importance amongst psychiatrists, mental health practitioners and even the trainees in Malaysia and Asia.

The WPA is an international association with members from numerous national psychiatric societies. The experts formed the WPA with the aim to increase the knowledge, skills, and interest in the field of mental health. The WPA has members in over 120 different countries, representing more than 200,000 international psychiatrists. The experts in the field of psychotherapy subsequently formed The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Psychotherapy Section.

Why psychotherapy approaches? Psychotherapies play a vital role in psychiatric practice. The biopsychosocial approach in the management of psychiatric disorders emphasizes the importance of integration of different modalities of treatments to achieve complete patient’s complete recovery. Thus, recognizing the matter, the conference theme, “Cutting Edge Evidence-Based Treatments in Psychiatry,” is so fitting.

The scientific committee has chosen relevant topics regarding incorporating psychotherapies in the treatments and handling individuals with mental health difficulties. The presentations and discussions will be an opportunity for the numerous delegates to hear and confer with the experts. However, the role of other treatments modalities especially psychopharmacology will be on the agenda as well.

Moreover, it will be an excellent opportunity for the delegates to explore the sights, sounds, and flavor of Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is a city with a mixture of many cultures, showcasing the diversity of Malaysia. The city will offer everything from modern to ancient sites, and of course food! The various and tasty cuisines will undoubtedly be the other good reason to visit Kuala Lumpur!

Please join us for an exciting and learning experience.

Thank you…

Dr Hazli Zakaria,
